How to find joy, and how to keep it, based on open conversations and being authentic.

We get to spend every day in a field that relies on passion to succeed. Passionate players, passionate audiences, passionate commentators. We spend every day engaging with people who love what they do, and we feel immense joy when we see them succeed. Whether it’s on or off the field, in creative execution or signing a new deal, these are the moments that fuel the passion of the Sponsorship industry. Yes, we have lows. Our team doesn’t always win. We don’t always sign that deal. But as Roger Federer says,
“Love winning. Learn from losing.”
We don’t find ourselves in the Sponsorship industry by chance, it’s a deliberate move sought out by those of us who love what we do and do what we love. Whether you’re an accountant, a physio, in sales, event management, engineer or even design, there is an opportunity to leverage your own skills and apply it to what you love.
By focusing on the combination of passion and skill, along with Gary Player’s mantra of
“the harder I practice the luckier I get”
the right opportunity to learn and grow in the Sponsorship industry will present itself.
This is also very much about a journey of perseverance. Those of us who have tried and tested different roles, met an incredible amount of equally passionate people and been to some of the most “bucket list” events we could ever have dreamed of will be nodding your heads. We have experienced incredible highs and heart-breaking lows, but you find yourself in a place that you’re genuinely happy. You have figured out how to find joy in your everyday.
One of the key challenges we face, is our over-willingness to be always on. Why? Because we love it. Whether it is sport, art, culture or lifestyle. Be it evenings, weekends or holidays, we can’t stay away. We need to be mindful that we can still love what we do, find joy in it, and deliver, without sacrificing our health, time with family and most importantly, time for ourselves.
2023 was a great year for Flash Sponsorship. We have wonderful relationships with our clients, we have built respect and trust with their sponsors, and have delivered on our goals. It’s what keeps the wheels turning day in and day out. We delivered on our North Star to do deals for our clients. We found the passion, the energy, and the enthusiasm consistently throughout the year to win. We showed up.
And we get it right, because we take time out, family is prioritised, we check in regularly on all levels, and we have open, honest conversations. We work from home because we can. These are the things that keep us nourished.
As we look ahead to what 2024 holds, we asked ourselves what the #1 thing is that we need to focus on to be successful? And to remain successful. Most obviously, our clients are our number one priority. And doing deals for them is our measure of success. But can we only focus on doing deals and still sustainably deliver the energy, authenticity, and creative ideas to do it all well, all the time?
As we set our goals for 2024, both professionally and personally, we are grateful. Grateful for work that we do, the brands that we represent, the people we interact with every day, and grateful that we get to do what we love and find joy in each and every day.
So, to build on our learnings, this is what you can expect from Flash in 2024:
- We will be goal orientated.
- We will celebrate.
- We will take time-out.
- We will do the things that bring us joy.
- And we will keep on learning.
